As you know the blog has taken a bit of a dip recently despite me being even busier than usual. The reason is that I am having a new blog designed at the moment and the designer cant guarantee that all the blog postings will transfer over easily. As the Weddings pile up waiting for processing I’ll blog another family portrait session. The Arthur family live in a beautiful home in rural perthshire, one of the nicest houses I have seen, the annoying thing is that it is currently up for sale. I’d have bought it in a flash had we not just moved last year. If anyone is interested I can email details!

Wedding Photographer in Dunkeld, Jen and James

Dunkeld Wedding Photographer, James and Jen, Dunkeld Cathedral

James is an old School friend of Carolines so he had asked her to photograph his Wedding to Jen, being free that day and knowing how hard a big wedding can be on your own I offered my services to Caroline as a second shooter. Having had Caroline as a second shooter for ages it was weird that the tables were turned.

James and Jen tied the knot in the beautiful Cathedral at Dunkeld, I am convinced that the architect designed that building with a Wedding Photographer in mind as the sun streams through those windows just about 2pm in Summer.

We met up with the guys at the Cathedral, they were very relaxed.

Jen had organised a vintage VW campervan as transport

Caroline was shooting upstairs and I was downstairs

The sun was out, people were happy and I didn’t have to do the family groups – that was Carolines job, after all I was just the second shooter!

Wedding Photographer in St Andrews, Andrey and Susanna - St Salvators

Andrey and Susanna had identified a few locations round St Andrews that they wanted to go and get photographs taken at and with my local knowledge we were able to pick a good number of locations to visit. However, firstly we had a few family groups to photograph in the Quad.

Some nice gardens in St Andrews, ideal for wedding photography

Some ones door – hope they dont mind, you can get away with a lot as a Wedding Photographer, especially in a place like St Andrews

Susanna looked stunning and the backlight from the doorway to the cathedral in St Andrews just makes this shot (in my opinion)

I was in a backlighting frame of mind

Nothing like being videoed at work

The hotel was looking great, long time since I photographed a Wedding here and it has certainly improved

The speeches were fantastic, both Fathers (1 Russian and 1 Swedish) made speeches in perfect English

Sometimes as a Wedding Photographer it just comes together, this was one of those days and I am delighted with the photographs as are Andrey and Susanna, and lets be frank, thats all that really matters.

Unfortunately no photography is allowed from the ground floor until after the service has been conducted which means that all the photographs are quite similar

Once the service was over Susanna and Andrey spent a bit of time chatting to their guests in the Quad before we had to leave on a fast walk round St Andrews for a few pictures.

St Andrews Wedding Photographer, St Salvators, Andrey and Susanna

A Swedish Bride, A Russian Groom and a Wedding in St Andrews – a typical day out for a Wedding Photographer. Andrey and Susanna met at St Andrews University so where else to hold their traditional Scottish Wedding in Late July. They choose the Golf Hotel for their reception and the famous and beautiful St Salvators Chapel in the grounds of the University.

St Salvators is the choice for so many University students who meet at St Andrews, this beautiful example of late gothic architecture was founded in 1450. In 1582 Patrick Hamilton was burned at the stake for being a protestant, nothing quite as sinister happening this day.

Being based in London, Andrey and Susanna were organising their St Andrews Wedding from afar, they chose me as their Wedding Photographer as they liked my style, had seen my website and decided I was the guy for them. Thankfully we had the opportunity to meet up a couple of times in the run up to the big day.

As usual I started with Susanna and the Girls

I moved onto the Quad to meet with Andrey and the Guys at St Salvators

Houston House Hotel Wedding Photography – Melissa and Alasdair

After the Wedding Service at Balerno Parish Church, Melissa and Alasdair had settled on Houston House Hotel for their reception. It’s a beautiful old castle near Uphall in West Lothian and on a good day offers some beautiful grounds for photography. However, today we were restricted to the interior which was also nice but not as nice as the gardens

We actually had a point in the day when the rain slowed up a little so we sneaked outside for a couple of photographs in a sheltered area

Wedding Photographer Balerno, Edinburgh – Melissa and Alasdair

For the first time I was in Balerno Parish Church to photograph the Wedding of Melissa and Alasdair. It was probably the worst day of Rain I have ever worked in, boy it chucked it down from start to finish. The Minister even had to pause the service for a few minutes while we let the thunder and lightning pass over.

Looking over the Edinburgh Skyline from the Church door we could see that it was even worse there and I felt sorry for any other Edinburgh Wedding Photographers as I think they were worse off than me.

I met up with Alasdair and his guys at the Church and we managed a couple of outdoor shots before the rain got too heavy for us

Melissa was a little late as they had waited to see if the rain would stop

Thankfully the Church was quite bright

Perthshire wedding photographer, Iain and Alison at Dalmunzie Castle

Once the service was completed there was a little time for chatting before we had to get started on the family group photographs but first I was hanging out a window for the 2 big groups

There are some Standing Stones in Glenshee that I know from doing a lot of Hillwalking in that area, we took my car and headed down the track, once I had leant my wellies to Alison we clambered up the hill to the top for the shots you see above

Back at Dalmunzie the guests were being entertained by a falconry display which was very interesting, I didnt get a chance to handle the birds but it looked great fun

Dalmunzie Hotel Wedding – Alison and Iain. Photography by Angus Forbes

My second wedding at Dalmunzie this year, what a difference a few months make to the weather. Last time was Sarah and Gerrys big day and whilst it started off ok the weather turned against us pretty quickly, then I was searching out areas of natural light, here I was searching out areas of shade.

Being a wedding photographer in Perthshire is a great job as there are so many wonderful venues to work in, Dalmunzie is certainly one of them, situated right at the top of a glen that forks off the main Glenshee Road, it’s a beautiful old building, very castle like with a tower (or2) and great gardens for outdoor wedding photography

Iain and Alison found me online and liked my style, the booked me before even having the chance to meet up but we did get the chance to meet a few weeks before the day when they were in the area sorting out some details. They elected for a Humanist Wedding outdoors in the garden and were having the rings delivered by a bird of prey

I made a comment that there are loads of hotel rooms that I spend just an hour or so in but have never stayed in, I realised just how dodgy that sounded!

What a cracking blue sky, this is typical weather for Scotland

Piperdam sits right on the boundary between Dundee and Perthshire, only 9 miles from where I live so it’s fair to say I know it and the staff very well. However A new one on me was that there is roof access for a group photograph, in fairness it does mean a ladder and a clamber out of an office window but it makes it so much easier to get a large group of people in the photograph.

Another great hidden jem in the Dundee area, Piperdam Resort is a lovely Wedding Venue, especially on a good day as the scenery around the fishing loch is beautiful. After the Church Service was over we headed straight out to Piperdam and I had arranged for the chauffeur to drop by the little jetty where we could take a few wedding photographs. Not only did this give Susan and Phil a welcome 10 minutes alone (well almost) but it meant that their guests would be there waiting for them when they arrived.

Once the service was over, we made a hasty departure for Piperdam for some photographs before the forecast rain came on.

Dundee Wedding Photographer – Susan and Phil. Photography by Angus Forbes

On a reasonably sunny Friday last week I was working with Susan and Phil on their Wedding Photography. The service was being held in Dundee, specifically in St Leonards Church then onto Piperdam for the celebrations. As usual my day began with Susan for Bridal Prep photography.

After a few shots here I made my way over to the Church to catch Phil and his Best Men arriving

It’s fair to say that the Church didnt offer the best opportunities for photography but we found a couple of spots

A small break from Weddings for now, I still have 6 in the pipeline for blogging but I am struggling to keep up with the workload both on Weddings and Commercial work (which normally dies at this time of year). So, a few family portraits to whet your appetite for now.

Family portraiture is very popular at the moment withy lots of bookings coming up over the next 3 months, I get a lot of families booking me for photography when they are on holiday in the area so if you are planning a family holiday in perthshire, tayside or fife and you think having a personalised photo shoot would be a great idea, just give me a call.

After the Wedding Service was over we all headed into the rose garden for drinks and a few family formal photographs. The grounds of Carberry are ideal for a Wedding Photographer, so many different areas both inside and out. If you are in the Edinburgh area and looking for a Scottish Castle type wedding venue then I’d say go and have a look at Carberry Tower, it’s just near Haddington in East Lothian.

Wedding Photography Carberry Tower, Marjory and Iain

Carberry Tower is a beautiful mansion house near Haddington which you can now rent for a wedding, it has lovely grounds and great interiors for photography. Additionally it has a small chapel in the walled garden which makes it ideal for couples that want a Scottish Wedding, have a Church but keep the whole thing in one place. I love photographing Weddings at Carberry Tower, it’s an easy venue for a Wedding Photographer and so close to Edinburgh too

It’s a great Church for Wedding Photography in Summer as the large doors to the Chapel are usually opened allowing lots of natural light to stream in.

Carberry Tower Wedding, Marjory and Iain

When Marjory and Iain booked me last year to photograph their summer scottish wedding at Carberry tower, I was really pleased, not only were they a lovely couple but Carberry Tower is fast becoming one of my favourite locations for Wedding Photography. It’s a beautiful old mansion house with lovely gardens and great indoor areas for photography which not only gives options for different photographs but in wet weather there are still plenty of places for photography.

After the speeches it was time for dancing. Photographing dancing can be a little hit and miss but with a bit of planning a decent wedding photographer will come up with the goods.

The first dance is always reserved for the Bride and Groom, as a Wedding Photographer I see loads of first dances, now and then a couple will have learned a routing.

Later on in the evening the dance floor fills up and the moves get faster

Clackmannanshire Wedding Photographer, Nicola and Neil at Dollar Academy

Neil and Nicola chose to have their Wedding at Dollar Academy, one of very few people to get married there. I was delighted that they chose me as their Wedding Photographer. This blog posting is all about the couple shots and speeches. Photographs of the Bride and Groom are a key part of any Wedding Photography.

This is the crowd from my table, what a great laugh we all had. The

scary thing is that a good majority of these people are Doctors!

The speeches are a good time for a Wedding Photographer to capture great expressions from the guests, despite people knowing that a photographer is there, their attention is generally drawn to the speaker leaving the photographer free to capture emotions and laughter.

Dollar Wedding Photographer, Neil and Nicola,

And so the evening continued. Neil and Nicola were having a lovely time at their Wedding in the grounds of Dollar Academy and I was delighted to be their Wedding Photographer.

And it was outside for the big surprise, the Dollar Academy Pipe band were plating especially for Nicola and Neil, not many weddings manage to have a full pipe band to play for them. I have only ever photographed 3 Weddings that managed a full pipe band and they have all been in the last 12 months

Even the kiddies were fascinated

Most guests had never seen a full pipe band play at a Wedding before

Wedding Photographer in Dollar, Neil and Nicola

Another beautiful day in Scotland saw me travel to Dollar Academy for the Wedding of Neil and Nicola. I was delighted that they had chosen me as their Wedding Photographer at Dollar Academy as I had such a great time last year when I was photographing the Wedding of LA and Pete who were married at Doune Castle then had their service at Dollar.

The Piper from Dollar Academy Pipe Band was tuning up, a surprise was in store for the guests later

Nicola arrived looking beautiful and ready for the Wedding Ceremony

Neil was waiting patiently for her arrival

This Wedding was a Humanist service, I photograph a lot of Humanist services

I guess it must be a little off for Nicola being back in the School Assembly room for a totally different reason

Bill the Humanist Celebrant was a really nice guy, the Wedding Service was very relaxed and personal and he made a Wedding Photographers life easy by allowing free movement round the room

The official Wedding Service was over and a photograph of the first kiss

Lots of photographs and Neils Brother offering a little encouragement

Drinking from the quaich is a Scottish Tradition and is carried out at a lot of Scottish Weddings

And that was it, the Wedding Service at Dollar Academy comes to a close and Neil and Nicola leave the room

Saturday saw me back in Dollar for the second time where I was booked to photograph the Wedding of Nicola and Neil. Nicola is a Dollar FP and only the second person to hold a Wedding in the academy (well actually the first person to hold an actual Wedding service in the Academy). Last year I was the official wedding photographer at LA and Petes wedding which was held at Doune Castle then the reception was at Dollar Academy. I’d only met Neil and Nicola for the first time 2 days before the service but I knew that we’d get along really well.

The service was a humanist service conducted by Bill Bedborough and it was a very personal and enjoyable service

This was a marquee wedding meal in the grounds of the school which is quite typical in Scotland.

The cake was made by a friend of Nicola and Neils

My very first Wedding at the Cults Hotel in Aberdeen this millennium was with Angela and Allan, a lovely couple that have been planning the big day for years. Angela has been a faithful follower of my Facebook page since she booked me.

The Cults Hotel is surprisingly nice inside, but slightly lacking in outdoor areas for photography.

So, it was back at the Landmark Hotel for another great Wedding, this time Joanne and Ewan were getting Married and I was delighted that they chose me as their Wedding Photographer

Jo and Ewan were Married in the Landmark Hotel Dundee, this is a beautiful hotel on the outskirts of town with great gardens for photography, unusually it also has lovely inside areas for internal photography in bad weather – we needed that for Jo and Ewans Wedding Photography

The good thing about Wedding Photography at the Landmark Hotel is the conservatory for group shots inside, the best mix of natural light but no rain.

Ewan and Joanne live in Cupar, Ewan fixes Helicopters for the RAF and Joanne is a Dental Nurse, there was a real possibility that Ewan might be posted to the Falklands right after the Wedding but he is now heading to England, still not good but better than the Falklands.

Unfortunately this was another Wedding that was affected by the weather but luckily the Landmark has some great indoor areas for Photography as well as the conservatory that gives the best of both worlds, natural light and shelter. As usual my day6 started in Joannes room

So, the day continued and the rain got heavier. The minister had told everyone that he had prayed for sunshine, even he could not manage to stop the rain. Andrew and Jennifer took it in their stride and had a great day regardless.

The weather was absolutely shocking last weekend when I had the pleasure to work with Andrew and Jennifer on their Wedding Photography. This was a fairly late booking for me only being booked 3 months ago, unusual for me to have a summer Saturday free at late notice. When I first met Andrew and Sarah at their lovely house in Edinburgh and they fed me with Toffee Apple Pie I knew that we’d all get along really well.

Sarah and Andrew are both hard working Doctors and they were organising their Wedding at fairly short notice

but they still managed to pull together a wonderful event, despite the weather. The Service was in the beautiful setting of St Vigeans Church, a Church I know well. My day started, as usual, with Bridal prep

While Sarah and Gerry enjoyed themselves I carried on the day building a record of the events, things that Sarah and Gerry might not have noticed as the day passed.

Understandably Sarah was not keen to go out in the rain but the front door of the hotel provided enough natural light for a couple of shots

Dalmunzie Hotel, Perthshire, Wedding Photography – Sarah and Gerry

My first Wedding at Dalmunzie for many years was last Saturday when I had the honour of photographing the big day of Sarah and Gerry. The day started out grey and dull and only got worse!

Guests were travelling from all over so singes were strategically placed on the various roads

Neil the Piper was braving the cold, he was a good piper, not one missed note that I could tell

Meanwhile, the girls were getting ready in the warmth of the hotel

Flowers were provided by Butterflies of Blairgowrie

Interesting to see the favours were provided by Sporran Keyrings who featured on my blog a couple of months ago.

The hotel dining room was looking beautiful

Gerry and his Best Men were keeping in touch by radio through the day to make sure everything ran smoothly, can you guess they are Police Officers?

We managed a few shots of the guys outside

After dinner (which was very good) we carried on with the family shots and also a few more couple shots

Louise threw her bouquet, it was caught by her Sister – much to the worry of her parents

Then it was time to dance

Excellent music provided by Funky Bumpers

And that was the end of the day for me, time to let the guests let their hair down without worrying about me photographing them.

Wedding Baxter Park Dundee, Photography by Angus Forbes, Louise and Ed

After the service was over it was time for a group shot everyone which we did on the steps in front of the pavilion, this is a great area for a large group of people so long as it’s not raining. Then we used the lovely old building and great light for some couple shots of Louise and Ed

The oil rig in the tay provided a really bad background but a little cropping and photoshop soon removed that

Then it was back top the Landmark Hotel where I was able to pass them into the capable hands of Hollie to look after. However, we still had some family formal and more couple shots to do before dinner.

Ed joked that the hand painted stones were to throw at the Best Man during the speeches

Louise's Dad kicked off

Louise's Sister found it very amusing

After dinner we carried on with family group shots and more Bride and Groom shots as we dodged the rain showers.

The only thing that annoys me about Baxter Park and the arrangement for Weddings is that no one is allowed to take a car in except the brides car, even the photographer needs to park on the street and with a big Wedding about to take place, space is limited.

I arrived to find Ed and his best man Andrew looking relaxed and quite excited about the day.

Ed was really enjoying the day which is the way it should be.

It looked like Dundee Camera club had turned out in force.

Louise and her Dad arrived in a beautiful car provided by Chauffeurs of Carnoustie

Being owned by Dundee council, if you are using the services of the local registrar then you are welcome to have your service in Baxter Pavilion rather than the local registry office. It’s so much nicer, especially on a good day, large south facing windows allow loads of natural light into the building.

Ed and Louise had chosen Baxter Park and the Landmark hotel for their big day, I started, as usual at Louise's Mums house

It was straight onto the couple shots and we started by driving a short distance to the edge of the loch for a few shots away from the other guests, sometimes this is the only time the couple get to be along (apart from me) on the day of their Wedding and many couples say this is a really nice time just to be together and not worry about guests for a little while

There was a moment here when Mairis dress almost went in the pond, that would not have been good.

Being animal lovers I thought that Mairi and Callum might like to feed the ducks

A short respite in the day for me meant that I could shoot a few pics of the room layout

As usual Stuart and the staff had done a great job

The football was on and most people had settled down to that

A quick chat with her parents before she began the walk down the aisle
At this point the Celebrant had said to Callum that he could have a look but he said no he’d just wait.

But he couldn’t wait so he sneaked a look

A service filled with laughter and fun, nothing stuffy here

The best man had real trouble opening the Champagne

I arrived at Piperdam to find Callum and the Boys looking relaxed and cheerful, it was a great day and Piperdam is a great venue in the sun.

Mairi and Callum were such a relaxed couple to work with, there was absolutely no stress about the day at all and it went swimmingly. All week the weather forecast was rain all day but in reality it was actually quite nice.

I started off at Mairis house where she was already in her dress so I took a few shots of her and her parents and bridesmaids.

The Cars arrived in plenty of time and we had a dry run so that I could shoot off to Piperdam for some shots of the guys.

Scottish Wedding Photographer, Birkhill Castle, Cupar. Claire and Andy

The last part of my day was some great shots of Claire and Andy, we were getting a little short on time by this stage as things had ruin on a bit. We started off by heading down to Birkhill Secret garden

Claire looked absolutely stunning in her dress and we managed to find some areas where the sun was not so harsh yet provided enough light to lift the dress from the background

We moved onto the walled garden near where the service had taken place.

We had to have the castle shot with the deep blue sky

And then the view, what a stunning place to live.

Thanks to Claire and Andy for being so easy to work with on the day and also to Gary Smith for keeping things moving along and last but definitely not least to Siobhan from Birkhill for being so helpful

Catching up on the blog, last Saturday took me to a beautiful location Birkhill Castle in Fife, the ancestral home of the Earl and Countess of Dundee. I photograph a lot of Weddings here, it’s an ideal location for a small house party type Wedding.

The weather was really good for an outside Wedding, this is not great news for a photographer however as harsh strong sunlight make for hard shadows but on the positive side of the coin it does make everyone smile and be happy and that's more important for a Wedding surely?

Andy was a little nervous, one of the issues with a location like Birkhill and not having a Wedding planner is all the little things that you need to remember on the day, he had a lot on his mind!

The view from the gardens is to die for.

Booking a Wedding Photographer in Scotland

Emails like this one I received today are the most frustrating part of being a Wedding Photographer, the inability to split yourself in 2!

Hi Angus, Having visited your site and blog and having seen a large sample of the relaxed and natural photographs including excellent recommendations from colleagues and friends, my fiance and I are very much interested in your services for our wedding day. Unfortunately upon viewing your calendar you appear to be booked already - our wedding is XXXXX July 2012 at Atholl Palace in Pitlochry. I am gutted as yours seems to be exactly the style of photography we are looking for and as a Blairgowrie family it would have been perfect to have a local photographer! I am emailing simply to note our interest in case the booking you already have is not fully confirmed or there happens to be a cancellation. I appreciate this is a long shot but I would rather ask the question than miss out altogether! Kind regards

This happens about once a month and it is as frustrating for the photographer as it is for the couple, obviously I have suggested other Photographers that might be free. However, to all Brides, if you find that you have made up your mind over a photographer (me or any other) then just go ahead and make the booking, no matter how far in the future it is and avoid situations like this.

After the couple shots we headed back to the Hydro for the formal receiving line which is held in a lovely south facing, glass fronted room with loads of natural light.

Wedding Photography Crieff Hydro Hotel, Michelle and Robert

The service was conducted by a family friend who also happens to be a Registrar – handy!

It’s great when the Celebrant is helpful by allowing you to stand at the front and also moves out of the way to allow you to get a shot of the Bride coming down the aisle. As everyone is standing up the only 2 places that you can see the Bride from is the front or the back so I was grateful for her allowing me to stand there briefly
This another of my favourite moments when the Brides Father leaves her at the bottom with her new husband

I say this a lot that at every Wedding there is a first, often it’s just a small thing that I have never seen before, this was actually quite a big thing, it was a Mauri Love song, performed by friends of Roberts
The formalities over, it was back up the aisle
